The Samsung Glyde SCH-U940 is equipped with Bluetooth, a full HTML browser, GPS navigation, a 2.0-megapixel camera, and 3G. It also has a full QWERTY keyboard, but the display is too small for the touch-interface justice. The Glyde measures is 2 x 0.7 x 3.9 in (WxDxH) and 4.1 oz weight. The 2.75 in display offers 262,000-color.

The touch screen offers haptic vibrating feedback with adjustable length of the vibration. There are three touch controls at the top of the display, the dialpad, the main menu, and the contacts list. The dialpad has a traditional 12-button design, plus dedicated Talk and End controls, a clear button, and shortcuts for contacts and recent calls lists. The small blue square at the center of the display, can be used to a shortcuts menu with 12 user-programmable icons. Two attractive wallpaper are one allowed to move stars in constellations around the sky and the other one interacted with a two-dimensional graphic of a Rubik’s Cube. A shortcut bar at the bottom of the display, takes to seven set functions such as the speakerphone, the message in-box, the missed calls list, the calendar, and the alarm clock.

The slider mechanism is well constructed, the keyboard is spacious and tactile even if the buttons are almost flush. The Glyde does not offer any navigation controls so we must use the touch screen at all times. At the right side there are a volume rocker/camera zoom, a camera shutter, and a power control. On the back side there are the camera lens, flash, and self-portrait mirror. The memory card slot is placed under the battery cover.

Some personal management features are a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a calculator, a calendar, an alarm clock, a stop watch, a world clock, a notepadand a text-to-speech functionality. Other features are stereo Bluetooth, speaker independent voice recognition, a voice memo recorder, and instant messaging. The Glyde supports Yahoo Mail, Windows Live, Gmail, and AOL Mail accounts, but we can’t view attachments. IMAP4 e-mail is an even trickier proposition. The Glyde doesn’t offer e-mail MicorsoftActive Sync, so it’s not the best option for road warriors. It has no Wi-Fi.

The picture was sharp enough with decent graphics, but there was some color distortion, and quick movements were pixelated and blurry. Small text like subtitles was difficult to read. Videos never paused for rebuffering, and the player didn’t freeze. Sound quality on videos was rather hollow, but voices matched the speakers’ mouths. The Glyde offers a full HTML browser. The page need to be loaded completely before click on other links, or the page tended to freeze. Also, because of the display’s size, we may need to zoom in to hit small links.

The Glyde has a 2.0-megapixel camera. The camera can be used to take pictures in six resolutions from 1,600×1,200 down to 176×144, and can choose from three quality settings. Some other options are a self-timer, a multishot mode, six color tones, four white-balance effects, spot metering, a brightness control, and three shutter sounds (plus a silent option). There’s also a nifty autofocus option and a 9x digital zoom, though the latter is unusable at the highest resolution. The flash is quite bright, and it has the self-portrait mirror. The camcorder takes clips with sound in two resolutions (320×240 and 176×144). Clips meant for multimedia messages are capped at 30 seconds; otherwise we can shoot according to the available memory. Camcorder editing options are similar to the still camera.

The Glyde offers 45MB of shared internal memory and accommodate cards up to 8GB. The Glyde’s photo quality was disappointing. Colors were washed out and our images were blurry. Videos weren’t much better; our clips were choppy and grainy. Some settings for the Glyde are using the variety of wallpaper, banners, alert tones, clock styles, and the dial font size on the display. The Glyde does not come with any games.

The Samsung Glyde offers great call quality, a broad selection of features, and a full alphabetic keyboard.

Minus :

The Samsung Glyde’s display is too small to do its touch interface justice. The photo quality is poor, and the e-mail support isn’t easy to use. It has no Wi-Fi. It can’t open the attachments. The Glyde has no game.
