The N96 measures is 2.2 in x 0.8 in x 4.1 in (WxDxH) and 4.4 oz weight. The 2.8 inch QVGA non touch screen display offers 16 million colors at a 240×320 pixel resolution. There is an ambient-light detector to adjust the backlighting and some settings for the home screen, such as themes, backlight, and font size.
The navigation array below the display are Talk and End keys, two soft buttons, a menu shortcut, a clear button, and a five-way directional keypad. There is also a small multimedia menu key to get the music, videos, photos, games, and more menus.
A microSD expansion slot is placed on the left spine. The dual speakers, a volume rocker, and a camera activation/capture key are placed on the right side. The N96 features a Video Center that acts as a hub for all video content, including Internet videos and video podcasts. It also supports MPEG-4 Part 2 (H.263/SP), MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264/AVC), WMV9, RealVideo video codecs and formats, with video playback at up to 30 frames per second (fps). The N96 is equipped with a DVB-H receiver, but not supports on this side of the pond.
The 5-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens is able to choose seven shooting modes and five quality settings. There’s a flash with a red-eye reduction option. Some settings are the brightness, contrast, white balance, color tone, ISO light sensitivity, and exposure value.

Some personal management features are a world roaming, a speakerphone, speed dial, conference calling, voice commands, a vibrate mode, and text and multimedia messaging. Bluetooth 2.0 supports for mono and stereo Bluetooth headsets, hands-free kits, dial-up networking, and file transfer.
The N96 is 3G capable, supports by the 850/1900MHz HSDPA bands and it also has integrated Wi-Fi. The N96 runs the third edition of the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 on the Symbian operating system. An app called QuickOffice is helpful to view Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, and it optimizes the pages for the phone’s screen. It can access IMAP4, POP3, and SMTP e-mail accounts. It also supports a number of push e-mail solutions, as well as Microsoft Exchange Server synchronization.
Some other productivity tools on the phone are a zip manager, a measurement converter, a PDF reader, a calendar, a clock, a calculator, and a message reader.
