This Android 2.2 smartphone boasts a dual-core processor, 4G support, a 4-inch quarter HD display, and a front-facing camera that enablesvideo calls over a cellular or Wi-Fi network. Motorola designed a laptop dock and software to work with the Atrix that would allow us to access the contents of our smartphone but provide us with a more PC-like experience. The Atrix has sleek designed and lightweight at 4.6 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick and 4.8 ounces. Too bad it lacks some of the finer details like a soft-touch finish on back.

A 4-inch qHD (quarter high definition) capacitive touch screen with a 960×540-pixel resolution placed at the front side. It’s comparable to the iPhone 4′s 940×640-pixel Retina Display, but since the Atrix has a slightly bigger screen, the pixel density isn’t as great, so text and images don’t look quite as smooth as they do on the iPhone. The screen washed out a bit in bright sunlight.

The touch screen is very responsive, both in terms of registering touches and switching between portrait and landscape mode. Thanks to the dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset, general navigation felt zippier. Such as pulling up the app menu feel faster than HTC Inspire 4G, which uses a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.

Standard Android shortcuts, such as menu, home, back, and search are placed below the display. A volume rocker placed on the right side. A Micro-USB port and an HDMI port placed on the left side. The camera and dual-LED flash placed on the back, as well as the power/lock button at the top center. The button also can be used as a fingerprint scanner for extra security (to use, go to Settings > Set up screen lock). AT&T packages the Motorola Atrix 4G with an AC adapter, a USB cable, an HDMI cable, and reference material.

The Motorola runs Android 2.2 with Motoblur. We can sign in to all our other e-mail and social network accounts to import our contacts, messages, and calendar appointments. The Atrix 4G Provided seven home screens that can be personalized with various widgets and shortcuts, such as a social network feed, weather widget, and mini media player. Motoblur now has a function very similar to HTC’s Leap screen feature where we can view all of our home screens in thumbnail view.

Motorola Atrix 4G was supported by dual-core processor. The smartphone is equipped with Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chipset, dual ARM Cortex A9 cores clocked at 1GHz and an ultralow-power GeForce GPU graphics processor (all are backed with 1GB of RAM). All of these give us snappier performance, faster browsing, and better gaming graphics.

Another feature supported by the Nvidia’s Tegra 2 processor is full HD 1080p video recording and playback via HDMI. For mean while the Atrix can only handle 720p HD video capture and playback through HDMI. The Atrix’s 5-megapixel camera offers a dual-LED flash, autofocus, and digital zoom. There is available five picture resolutions and a variety of scene modes and effects, but there are no white-balance controls, ISO settings, or the like. The options are pretty much the same in camcorder mode.

Picture quality and Images are sharp enough. Video quality was above par. Clips recorded at 720p looked sharp, even with action scenes. The Atrix offers 16GB of onboard memory with the option of expandable memory. The expansion slot supports up to 32GB cards. The smartphone’s media player is compatible with multiple audio and video formats, including MP3, WMA, AAC, AAC+, AAC+ Enhanced, AMR NB, 1080P MPEG4 (with the exception noted above), H.264, WMV, and Xvid/DivX at 30 frames per second.

The Atrix features an HDMI port. We can connect our device to TV, and then turns it into a remote control! There is a front-facing VGA camera, which can be used to take self-portraits and make video calls. The Atrix doesn’t come preloaded with a video chat client. For regular voice calls, the Motorola Atrix 4G offers quad-band world roaming, a speakerphone, call waiting, call forwarding, conference calling, voice dialing, and text and multimedia messaging. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, (802.11b/g/n), and assisted GPS are also onboard, as well as 4G over AT&T’s HSPA+ network. The Atrix can be used as a mobile hot spot for up to five devices., but we need to pay an additional $20 per month on top of the Data Pro plan, so $45 per month total for 4GB of data.

With Android 2.2, the smartphone supports such features as Google Maps Navigation. The Atrix can also sync up with multiple e-mail and social networking accounts, and offers a unified inbox and shared calendars. The handset ships with a few preloaded apps: Quickoffice, Vlingo’s voice recognition program, and the Blockbuster Video mobile app, to name a few. Of course, we also got our obligatory AT&T services–AT&T Navigator, AT&T FamilyMap, and AT&T U-Verse Live TV–on there, but we can uninstall any of these apps if we wish. AT&T does not allow us to sideload third-party applications that aren’t in the Android Market.

We can dock the smartphone to a laptop shell to continue using it but with a full keyboard and 11.5-inch screen. We can make and receive calls using the dock’s speakers or a Bluetooth headset, send text messages and e-mail, download apps from the Web-based Android Market, and more. The combination of the smartphone’s dual-core processor and the Webtop app developed by Motorola allows us to have PC-like functionality, including a full Firefox 3.6 browser and Adobe Flash Player, with just this 2.4-pound dock and our smartphone. There’s also an integrated Citrix application that gives account holders access to their virtual desktops.

The laptop dock designed light weight with brilliant and crisp display, and the keyboard is very reminiscent of the MacBook Air. It also features two USB ports in the back. The battery is rated for 8 hours of battery life, and it will charge the phone while it’s connected to the dock. The quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) Motorola Atrix 4G in New York using AT&T service and call quality was fair enough. This smartphone can be used with the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset and the Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active.

The Motorola Atrix 4G shipped with a 1,930mAh lithium ion battery with a rated talk time of 9 hours and up to 10.4 hours of standby time. The Atrix 4G has a digital SAR rating of 1.47W/kg. The Motorola Atrix 4G has 7 hours for video battery life, 12,3 hours for audio battery life, 48 seconds for boot time, and 6 seconds for web page load time.

Positive :

The Motorola Atrix 4G features a dual-core processor and a sharp qHD (quarter HD) display. The Android 2.2 smartphone has a sleek design and a 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing camera for video calls, faster browsing, better gaming graphics, and an HDMI port. It also can be used as remote TV.

Minus :

No soft-touch finish on back. No 1080p HD video recording or playback at launch. AT&T does not allow us to sideload third-party applications that aren’t in the Android Market. We didn’t experience great HSPA+ 4G data speeds.

The iPhone 4 features a high-resolution display, a faster processor, and video calling, but it also sports unexpected additions like a new antenna and a gyroscope. It available in white and black versions. The profile is thinner with a new front-facing. The iPhone 4 is equipped with a new device named iOS 4 operating system, which brings such much-needed features as multitasking, a unified e-mail in-box, and app folders for the home screen.

The new operating system are long overdue. The new iPhone’s front and back sides are glass, both surfaces are flat, and a stainless steel border circles the entire phone. Other new design elements are the aforementioned front-facing camera, split volume controls, a noise-cancellation microphone, and a new LED flash with the main camera lens. The iPhone 4 also switches to a Micro-SIM format, just like the iPad.

The iPhone 4 has a standard noise-cancellation feature, enough camera flash quality, and the front-facing camera can be used for self-portraits in addition to the new FaceTime feature. The Apple is pushing the Micro-SIM format. I don’t know exactly the reasons why Apple change the Micro-SIM format, may it will be used to prevent iPhone jailbreakers. Unfortunately I don’t know whether we will be able to use the same Micro-SIM between on an iPhone 4 and an iPad 3G.

The stainless steel border doubles as a new antenna that circles the entire phone. I don’t know yet, whether it will effected the call quality or Wi-Fi reception, or even an indirect admission that data and voice reception has been troublesome. The iPhone 4 features a 940×640-pixel ( 326 pixels per square inch) “Retina Display,” which is four times the resolution of previous iPhone models. It uses the same IPS display that’s found on the iPad with an 800:1 contrast ratio.

The display is totally two thumbs clear. Photos looked especially lovely. The iPhone 4 will feature the same A4 chip with the iPad. The result is a faster processor and improved battery life. The iPhone’s camera has always been decent, but it’s lacked features found on many basic phones. That’s why we applaud the 5-megapixel resolution, the new LED flash, and the 5x digital zoom. The iPhone 4 also has a new back-side illuminated sensor, which requires a more-detailed explanation. It records 720p high-definition video at a constant 30 frames per second. The iPhone 4 has a multitasking, the unified in-box and the home screen folders. The iPhone 4 is offering a three-axis gyroscope. FaceTime will work only on Wi-Fi.

HTC Evo 4G is the America’s first 4G smartphone. Only a limited group will be able to really enjoy the full potential of the Evo 4G at launch because of the limited reach of Sprint’s 4G network. The worst one is the mandatory $10 premium data add-on, no matter you live in a 4G market or not.

HTC Evo 4G has the same shape with HTC HD2. It measures 4.8 inches tall by 2.6 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick and weighs 6 ounces. It rocks a 4.3-inch capacitive touch screen that’s downright mesmerizing. The extra screen real estate makes a huge difference when viewing Web pages and reading text. The Evo also supports the pinch-to-zoom gesture in a number of apps. The display shows vibrant colors and the sharp WVGA 480×800-pixel resolution. There is a built-in light sensor that will automatically adjust the backlight based on the ambient light.

The large display has a nice spacious keyboard. Even in portrait mode, we were able to quickly punch out a message with both thumbs with minimal mistakes. Four touch-sensitive navigation controls placed below the screen : home, menu, back, and search. A long press of the home key will bring up a list of our most recently used apps. There’s a volume rocker on the right side, and the top of the device features a power button and 3.5mm headphone jack. A Micro-USB port and an HDMI port are placed on the bottom. The latter is a Type D connector, so we’ll have to get a compatible cable to hook the phone up to your TV. There’s also a handy kickstand on back.

In the HTC Evo 4G package, we’ll have an AC adapter, a USB cable, an 8GB microSD card, and reference material. It has HTC Sense inside, which gives Android a more user-friendly interface. In many cases, it improves on the core functions by better integrating the features, which is why we’re glad to see that Sprint had the sense to go with Sense on the Evo 4G.

The Evo 4G runs the newer version of HTC Sense, includes a revamped mail widget that can take you to a list view of all your e-mail instead of just one message at a time. Once in the mail app, there’s a handy tabbed interface at the bottom that lets you view unread messages, attachments, meeting invites, and more with a simple touch. The Agenda widget also now displays your whole agenda on the screen, and, like the latest HTC devices, you get an animated weather widget right on the home screen that automatically displays the current conditions based on your location.

The new Group Contacts widget will help us to organize our contacts by groups. The Friend Stream provides a single place for all our social-networking needs, start from updates from Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. We can call the screen as the Leap screen. Pinching the home screen or pressing the home button, brings up a thumbnail view of all our home screen panels, so if we have our favorite apps and widgets on those screens, we easily “leap” to the screen we want. The Evo 4G offers seven home screen panels with different Scenes, which presents a whole new set of seven home screen panels that we can customize by the theme of the Scene (Social, Work, Travel, Play, and so forth).

The Evo 4G also equipped with other useful features, such as Google Maps with Navigation, voice-to-text entry, live wallpapers, and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera, in addition to an 8-megagpixel camera that can shoot HD-quality video, and will come with a Qik video chat application. Well than we can make video calls. Other voice features include a speakerphone, speed dial, smart dialing, voice commands, conference calling, visual voice mail, and text and multimedia messaging with threaded chat view. Bluetooth, 3G, GPS, and integrated Wi-Fi are also onboard, and we can use voice and data simultaneously, provided we’re in a 4G market.

The Evo 4G also supports a number of the carrier’s services, such as Sprint TV, Sprint Football Live, Nascar Sprint Cup Mobile, and Sprint Navigation. It offers 1GB of internal memory but the microSD expansion slot can accept up to 32GB cards. It provides a more faster data speeds for Web browsing, downloads, streaming media, and uploading photos–all from our smartphone. The Evo 4G also equipped with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8650 processor, 512MB RAM, and a 1,500mAh lithium ion battery.

Plus :

The HTC Evo 4G has a good 4G speeds. The mobile hot-spot feature lets us connect up to eight devices. It has a front-facing camera for video chats and also comes with an 8-megapixel camera with HD-video-recording capabilities. The Evo 4G completed with YouTube’s HQ video player, Android 2.1 with HTC Sense, and an HDMI port. IT also has other things such as an extra-large 4.3-inch touch screen and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.

Minus :

Sprint’s 4G network is limited at this time, making the mandatory $10 premium data add-on tough to swallow for anyone outside of the coverage area. The Evo 4G lacks support for Bluetooth voice-activated dialing. Battery drains quickly with 4G.

The Canon PowerShot S90 is equipped with some of the best controls on a compact camera for manual and semimanual shooting modes. The S90 has a textbook Canon box-and-circle design. The S90′s finer design points revolve around the excellent wide-angle f2-4.9 lens and its manual and semimanual shooting controls.

There is a new Control Ring around the lens that can be assigned to handle changes to aperture, shutter speed, focus, zoom, white balance, exposure compensation, or ISO. A button on top lets us speedily change what it controls. The ring rotates with firm, pleasing clicks so it’s easy to select settings accurately. The Control Dial around the directional pad on back works in tandem with the Control Ring to change settings quickly. In Scene mode, tha control dial changes the scene type we’re using. It moves much too freely and can result in accidental changes. The combination of the two rings can make swifter changes than other compact cameras.

The small flash on top of the body automatically pops up and retracts when turned on and off. The S90 is compatible with Canon’s add-on HF-DC1 flash unit. There are mini-HDMI and USB/AV outputs under covers on the right camera’s right side.

The S90 offers not more than 25 shooting modes. The bulk of these are specialty scene modes, 17 in all and none of them are out of the ordinary for PowerShot models. The Auto mode quite Canon’s reliable scene-recognizing Smart Auto feature. The Low Light mode drops the resolution to 1,824×1,368 pixels (2.5 megapixels), but allows for a sensitivity of ISO 12,800. A VGA-quality movie mode is on the dial as well, not good for HD fans. The optical zoom can’t be used while recording.

Other shooting modes that can be used such as Program AE, Shutter priority, Aperture priority, Manual, and Custom. The custom mode lets us assign a frequently used set of shooting options and settings to the C position on the mode dial. To go with it, we can register up to five commonly used menu items to a My Menu tab in the main-menu system.

Exposure bracketing and focus bracketing options will take one photo at a manual focus position and then one each at preset positions nearer and farther; manual white balance correction; and raw or raw plus JPEG capture. There are 45 shutter speeds from 15 seconds to 1/1,600 of a second and 14 aperture values, f2 through f8. We also get a selectable range of 17 ISOs between ISO 80 and ISO 3,200.

From powered off to first shot is 1.8 seconds and it’s the same from shot-to-shot when shooting in high-quality JPEG, shooting raw the time extends to 3.4 seconds. Continuous shooting and saving in JPEG is about 1 frame per second. It takes 0.5 second to focus and capture in bright conditions, 0.6 second in low-light conditions.

The S90′s photo quality is good enough for a compact camera. The photos have minimal noise. Its colors are also consistent through to ISO 1,600 so usable photos at small print sizes are possible. The lens is sharp and consistent from edge to edge. There’s a small amount of barrel distortion at the camera’s widest 28mm-equivalent position. The zoom is short on this camera–3.8x–so there was no reason to expect to find any pincushion distortion and there wasn’t any. What was visible was some chromatic aberration that was a below average amount in high-contrast situations if we print of 8×10 inches or larger. Its color quality was excellent for little compact. The exposure and white balance were good enough even with highlight clipping.

Moto for the PowerShot S90 is “the perfect everyday camera for people who are serious about great photography.” The lens, controls, and shooting options make it a fine choice for enthusiasts. The S90′s photo quality is on par with the best PowerShots. It’s performance makes it best suited for portraits, landscapes, and the like; but not for fast moving subjects.

We can describe this Nexus as a “superphone” and “the meeting place of Web and phone”. Big plus for the Nexus One are the Snapdragon processor, the AMOLED, the enhanced voice dialing capabilities and the noise cancellation feature. Some minus are the music player continues to underwhelm, app storage remains limited to the internal memory, the handset lacks hands-free Bluetooth dialing, and it does not support Outlook Calendar syncing.

One thing we should remember that the Nexus One is sold exclusively by Google.
The Nexus One has a sleek and attractive candy bar, touch-screen-only design, a trackball and prominent display. It measures are 4.56 x 2.36 x 0.47 in with only 4.58 ounces weigh and 3.7-inch AMOLED display. Bursting with 16.7 million colors and an 800×480-pixel resolution. Everything from standard text to busy photos and graphics jumped right off the display in full glory. The Android 2.1 operating system adds to the fun with 3D graphics and live wallpapers, which are animated backgrounds that react to our touch and our music.

Nexus One display offers an accelerometer, an ambient light sensor, a proximity sensor, and haptic feedback also available. The touch interface is accurate and responsive, both on the edges and in the center. Nexus One makes some improvement on the home screen. A square touch control with a grid design replaces the menu. There are dots on either side of the touch control that let us skip to an individual home screen or view thumbnails of all home screens in a row. There is also a shortcut bar that allows us to activate and deactivate the Bluetooth, GPS, syncing, and Wi-Fi features, and control the display brightness.

There are four touch controls below the display, used for a back button, home and search keys, and a control for the notifications menu. A long press to the home screen will bring up our recent features, and a long press to the search control will activate voice search. When we’re not using the touch screen, the trackball will be our primary interface tool for accessing menus. It’s large and responsive, and it lights up when we have a message.

The contacts menu is limited by the available memory, but each entry can store multiple fields for phone numbers, street addresses, work information, e-mails, URLs, instant-messaging handles, nicknames, and notes. Contacts are automatically synced from our Gmail account, and we can also sync Facebook and Microsoft Exchange contacts.

The Nexus One supports Gmail and POP3 and IMAP4 accounts. We added an Outlook Web Access (OWA) CNET e-mail, but we were unable to add a Yahoo Mail account via automatic setup. Too bad that not all Yahoo accounts are supported. When we typed in our Yahoo account anyway, the Nexus One informed us that our username and password were incorrect. We were successful only after we performed a manual setup (we’ll need the correct ports and server names). Note that free Yahoo accounts will not sync over Wi-Fi.

Even though the Gmail Calendar will sync automatically, the Nexus One does not support Outlook Calendar and notes. The Nexus One’s top feature is its voice command features. In addition to dialing, we can perform a variety of functions, such as updating our Facebook page, composing a text message, and searching the Android Market using only our voice.

The 5-megapixel camera offers four resolutions, the aforementioned flash, white balance and color effect controls, autofocus, infinity focus, a 2x digital zoom, and three quality settings. The enhanced camera interface came with Android 1.6 with quick switch to the camcorder. We can record up to 30 minutes of video in a 720×480-pixel resolution (20 frames per second), but clips for multimedia messages are capped at 30 seconds. We can also select a quality setting, a color effect, and white balance.

Photo quality is satisfying. Colors looked natural and there was little image noise. The flash is relatively bright. Video quality is about average. When shooting, we still have to keep our phone steady for up to 4 seconds to avoid a blurry photo. We can add music via a USB cable, a memory card, or from the Amazon MP3 Store. Call quality was quite good on the whole. Conversations were clear, the volume was loud, and little static or interference.

Some other management features are a calculator, a full duplex speakerphone, a compass, a text-to-speech feature, A2DP stereo Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, text and multimedia messaging, and the full slate of Google applications like YouTube, Picasa, Google Voice, Google Talk, and Google Goggles. Google Maps offers the standard features, plus a night mode and search suggestion. Nexus One also has the Car Home application, which offers local search and real-time, turn-by-turn directions with voice.

The full HTML Web browser lacks Flash Lite. Zoom in by double-tapping our finger and by using the pinch. The browser offers other Android features like bookmarks, multiple windows, and the capability to cut and paste. Music quality is decent over the external speaker, but a headset will offer the best experience. Streaming video over the YouTube app is mostly satisfying, but it will depend on our 3G connection. The Nexus One’s greatest triumph is its 1Ghz Snapdragon processor. Applications loaded instantly and there was no lag when switching between features.

Plus :

The Nexus One has a gorgeous display, a lightning-fast processor, and a loaded feature set. This is truly the fastest Android phone. The enhanced voice capabilities worked flawlessly, and the phone delivers solid performance. The photo quality and video quality are above average.

Minus :

The Nexus One forces us to store apps on the internal memory. The media player remains average, and it’s missing some wanted features like hands-free Bluetooth dialing. Bad news, Outlook Calendar syncing is not available.
